Making Wedgies

By Bob Davis

8/21/2002

I’m sure all of us have seen wedgies now. Chris Mrosko of course wrote a very good article describing how he goes about them for Historical Miniatures magazine. He used resin to fill his wedgy of a Russian tank. I have used epoxy to fill two wedgies, which works very well. One problem you will face though is the weight of the tank section once it is filled. You will need a fairly stout rod to secure the section to your base. This in turn makes it harder to hide the rod. On two other wedgies I have simply sealed off the tank section with sheet plastic. This then allows you to use a smaller support rod that can be run through the track into the road wheel and into its axle. This can be done on more than one road wheel if needed. You end up with a very light tank section that seems to be setting on its track with no visible means of support. This technique is easiest on vehicles with simple shapes, such as a hetzer, panther, Sherman, etc. Just be sure to use plastic that is fairly thick as you will be sanding it to even things out.
